Tomato chutney or tomato thokku is a tangy, spicy, delicious chutney/pickle made usually as a side-dish for dosa/idly and the variety. I haven't added a pic for this post, but will do soon..
For a health info, this dish is a little bit on the more oily end as oil serves as a preservative and also adds to taste. Of course, anything that tastes good will surely be less healthy! Here we go with the recipe:

Tastes amazing with pongal/idli/dosa. On a different thought, mix with hot rice and savour the taste..

Time Required: 30-40 minutes
What's Required:
- Tomatoes - 7-8 medium sized
- Red chilli powder - 2 teaspoons (or as per your spice meter)
- Fenugreek seed powder - 1-2 teaspoons
- Salt to taste
- Gingely Oil - about 1 tablespoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 8-10
- Asafoetida - lavish pinch
- turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
How to Prepare:
- To make fenugreek seed powder, take about 50gm of fenugreek, dry roast and make a fine powder. Additionally you can add red chillies, roast them as well and make a mix powder of fenugreek seeds and ed chillies. This powder can also used be used for regular vegetables, mor kozhambu preparation and mango pickles.
- Cut tomatoes into small pieces. I prefer that it is cut rather than blended.
- In a wok, add the oil and add mustard seeds. When mustard splutters, add asafoetida and curry leaves.
- Now add the cut tomatoes and add chilli powder, turmeric powder. salt and mix well
- Add about 1/2 cup of water to the mixture and mix well.
- Now turn the flame to low and allow the tomatoes to cook well. This will take about 20 minutes.
- Keep stirring in between.
- Wait till the raw smell of tomatoes is gone and the mixture turns thick and tomatoes become mushy. When a chutney/pickle consistency is reached, turn off the flame and let it cool.
- Store in a air-tight dry container. This will last upto 3-4 days.
