Kuzhi paniyaram or mini idlies is yet another variation for idly. I have already posted one another variety of making idly, Masala idly. This dish is usually a hit with kids due to the color, size and taste of it. Its an easy to make snack or breakfast recipe with leftover or fresh dosa batter. This recipe requires a special type of idly plate/pan (see pic below) that has multiple small grooves. Since this idly is not steamed as with regular ones, these are also called fried idlies. Health freaks, stay assured, its only shallow, fried that too with just about 2 drops of oil.

Let's get started:
Time required: About 30 min
What's required:
- Idly batter - 3 cups
- Onions - 1, finely cut
- Bell Pepper - 1/2 finely cut, Any color
- Potato - 1, finely cut
- Chilli powder - 1 teaspoon or Green chillies 1, finely cut
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Jeera - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ground pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
- Asafoetida - pinch
- Cooking Oil - 2 teaspoons
- Gingelly oil to coat the paniyaram plate
How to Make:
- In order to make the masala, you can refer to the masala idly recipe that I had posted earlier. Again, you can add vegetables as per your choice.
- Once the masala is ready, mix it with the batter and add the ground pepper. Adjust salt as per taste. Make a consistent mixture of the masala and batter.
- Heat the pan and add about 2 drops of gingely oil to each groove of the pan
- Pour about a tablespoon of the masala batter into each groove.
- Cover the pan with a plate for about 2 minutes.
- Remove cover and slowly slide the corners of each idly/paniyaram to check if its cooked on the bottom side.
- Once the color changes to light brown, slowly turn over the idly/paniyaram and cook till the other side also becomes brownish in color.
- You can pierce the idly/panyaram with a small needle or knife edge in the center to check if its cooked. If the needle/knife comes out clean, its good to remove from heat.
- Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve with chutney/milagai podi or as is.
