Let me tell you, buying diamond is no easy job. There are some basics that you should know, when buying diamond. This knowledge is helpful to ask for the right piece of diamond and also understand its characteristics. Here are some must knows about diamonds:
Diamonds are graded and priced based on the four C's - Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat weight.
- Diamond Cut is the reflective properties of a diamond. Well-cut diamonds reflect light with brilliance. This reflection is the mesmerizing sparkle off the diamonds that people fall for.
- Diamond Clarity is about flaws. Diamonds are created under high pressure and hence are bound to have flaws. The value of diamond depends on the Clarity grade ranging from Flawless to Included 3. Most recommended clarity type is the VVS (Very very Slight Inclusions) and VS (very slight inclusions). Inclusions are flaws found inside the diamond while Blemishes are the flaws on the surface.
- Diamond Color also plays an important role in deciding the value of diamond. The more whiter the diamond, the brighter reflection it gives and higher priced it is. Color rating ranges between D to F, G to I and J to M and further down to Z. D to F being the rarest and the whitest of diamonds, G to I being the recommended color, J to M showing a hint of yellow and other grades below M showing more of yellow or brownish color. There are florescent diamonds as well that are blue, green or bright yellow in color. These are more precious for the color they emit.
- Diamond Carat weight is the measure used to weigh diamonds. Carat is different from Karat. Karat is actually used to weigh gold. 1 carat = 0.2gm. Very obviously, higher the weight, exponentially higher is the cost of the diamond.
Remember, no two diamonds are the same. Each diamond is unique based on its four C's. Ensure you are well informed when buying a diamond. Also, say No to conflict diamonds or blood diamonds.
