How I lost it is a hilarious story and I will keep the story for a later time. I kept on postponing the reapplication since it meant gathering documents and completing required formalities. I was very much passive in starting the process, since i thought its a Government process and I will have to run around n number of times to n number of places. However, I found the online application process that seemed to make things much simpler. I still however had the same ill-feeling about the Government procedures. Finally, 2 weeks back, I completed the process and sent my application to the PAN card processing center in Pune. I was very much pleased, actually surprised to receive a prompt SMS acknowledgement from the PAN office after they received my application. Another SMS in about 4-5 days to indicate that the documents had been verified and then a final one to notify me of the dispatch of the new PAN card. All this in a matter of less than 2 weeks! - It's illegal to own multiple PAN cards in India
- If you need a new PAN card, you need to cancel the existing one and then apply for a new one
- In case, the PAN card is damaged/lost, then you can raise a request for reprint of PAN card here.
- Read the Instructions carefully in the link above and then choose your PAN card type from the drop down provided. This will take you to the online application form.
- Fill out the form and then Submit it. Once submitted, you will receive an Acknowledgment.
- Put together all your supporting documents and the Acknowledgement and send it to the PAN office.
- You will receive a SMS when the PAN center has received your application
Some points to be noted while applying online:
- The application form to request for a new PAN card and also request for a reprint are the same.
- There are check boxes for each field that need to be ticked if you wish to change the existing information from your existing PAN card.
- Ensure to send the supporting documents exactly as you have mentioned in the online form.
- Ensure that the supporting documents provide all the necessary information as required. For example, if you wish to change your name in the PAN card to make it inline with your Passport and you have chosen Passport as the supporting document for Proof of Identity, ensure that the name you have entered in the online form is exactly same as in Passport.
- Ensure the photo is clear and inline with the PAN application requirements. Be careful while putting a cross-signature on the photo.
- When sending the application, remember to superscribe the envelope with the Acknowledgement number. This has been mentioned in the Instructions in the online portal.
